About Our Project

Through reconstruction and replication of material culture from the past, Flinders University archaeology students take us around the world and back in time through eighty six artefacts.

First year archaeology students were asked to research an artefact from any past society, time period and geographic location.

Applying the methods of experimental archaeology, students were challenged to replicate that artefact using as far as possible original techniques, methods and materials.

Each object is a unique creation with its own story. The diversity of interests of first year students are reflected in the range of objects presented from across the Middle East, Europe, Oceania and Asia to the Americas.

ARCH 1001 students say replicating an artefact was harder than it looks....

…because the original was made by people who were basically masters of their trade.

Combining creating the replica and the research was a good way to get informed about the artefact I enjoyed learning about the culture of the civilization that surrounded the artefact.

It was very difficult to remake the life vest. I had no pattern or method to work from. I worked from a photograph. After the assignment I stumbled on actual measurements from an official Titanic life vest. I was pleased to know my scale was relatively on track.

The hardest part of this research I found was the information regarding directly to the artefact and its exact use by the society in question.

…the artefact I chose was originally hand carved out of limestone and to replicate this without those skills required changing material completely.

It was a lot of fun both researching and making the replica. All the tiny bits of detail on my statue were difficult to form with clay, so it really helped me to understand the skill of the original carver who was able to do this with limestone.

While doing my rock painting Jacko taught me the same way my grandfather taught him. This made me feel happy and proud knowing he had passed on his knowledge to Jacko.
